Olives, Mount of

Olives, Mount of
A hill about 1.6 km.(1 mile) long to the east of Jerusalem, separated from it by the Kidron valley, on which Gethsemane (Hebrew for an ‘oil-press’) was situated. Jesus resorted to it for prayer (Mark 14:32) and stayed at Bethany on the south side (Matt. 21:17). The mount was a place of eschatological [[➝ eschatology]] associations: from it Jesus foresaw Jerusalem's destruction (Mark 13:3 ff.) and Luke pictured the ascension and promised return as taking place there (Luke 24:50; Acts 1:12). It had been prophesied that on the day of the return of the Lord to Jerusalem he would stand on the mount (Zech. 14:4), and this was applied to Jesus.
